Good Job of Filming a Creative & Interesting Story

This enjoyable feature does a good job of filming a creative, interesting story using G.K. Chesterton's "Father Brown" character. Alec Guinness is a very good realization of Father Brown, and Peter Finch provides him with a worthy foil. The story uses a good variety of interesting settings, with numerous interesting turns in the plot, and some good moments from the supporting cast.

What makes it more intriguing than the average crime/mystery movie is that from the start Father Brown is more interested in reforming the criminal than in punishing him. It leads to a story that has some of the same elements as a conventional crime film, but it also adds a creative dimension that makes it so much more interesting than the dreary, excessive spectacles of the present time that drown out any substance with undue amounts of violence and crudity.

The story could, of course, have easily become implausible and/or annoyingly moralistic, but thanks to Guinness's usual fine performance, and good direction from Robert Hamer, that is not at all the case. While there's nothing flashy here, it's an interesting and enjoyable little feature, and a nice change of pace.

The pleasant, lighthearted love story was lots of fun--and the costuming was amazingly authentic. Many thoughtful touches, beautiful settings, historically correct outfits and accessories make this a lovely and visually appealing film--what a wonderful change of pace!

Emmett Devery is being blackmailed by his former partner, Sam Baggott, who served a prison term years before on a shady business deal. Devery's daughter, Barbara, and his attorney, Marc Hill, in love with Barbara, know nothing about the situation. Baggott applies more blackmail-pressure and is killed by Jeff Calder, the boyfriend of cheating-wife Marge Baggott, who tried to double-cross Marge by getting the money himself. The police investigation of Baggott's murder leads to Devery, who admits that Baggott was blackmailing him but denies killing the extortionist. Hill and Barbara begin their own investigation.

B-movie stalwarts help redeem overlooked, low-budget late noir

Double Jeopardy is a Republic crime drama that seldom makes even the most inclusive lists of film noir, even though, in all its grunginess, it's a little better than many that do make the cut. Its director, R. G. Springsteen, churned out umpteen dozen forgotten horse operas (and his most notorious credit was The Red Menace). That doesn't inspire confidence, but he does more than a passable job on a passable story.

`Stumblebum' Robert Armstrong hasn't worked for years, but manages keep himself in whiskey and occasionally to pay rent on the one-room flat he and his unfaithful wife (Gale Robbins) share with the $500 bucks he gets every month from a mysterious stranger. Meanwhile, on the much better side of the tracks, the stranger (John Litel) is putting together the financing for a new housing development but, to the bafflement of his lawyer and future son-in-law (Rod Cameron), won't consider low-interest government loans.

Their two worlds, existing in uneasy truce, collide when Robbins, conspiring with her used-car-salesman lover (Jeff Calder), goads Armstrong into strong-arming Litel for a big payoff (when he gets it, the adulterous couple plan run off to Mexico together). But in the deserted canyon where blackmailer and victim had their rendezvous, Armstrong's body is found inside a wrecked car; Litel is charged with his murder. Cameron starts sniffing around to find the truth in what the police think is an open-and-shut case.

There's a fair amount of crummy atmosphere in this low-rent, late noir, abetted by a seasoned cast of Hollywood B-movie veterans (Minerva Urecal as a meddlesome landlady and Dick Elliott as Calder's boss Happy Harry also appear). It's no Double Indemnity, but it passes the time.

Sweet Marilou I'm so in love with you!

The portmanteau film is not par excellence an easy thing to do :only Julien Duvivier ("Un Carnet De Bal" ) and Max Ophûls ("Le Plaisir" ) made really memorable works.It was often made by different directors ,which meant uneven results.Here it's Carlo Rim's work.

"Escalier De Service " is an undistinguished effort ,which most people want to watch today because of Louis De Funès's small part in the last segment.The main thread is a maid who can't find a steady job ;wherever she works ,something goes wrong and either she must give in her notice,or she is dismissed.

Segment one involves a minister/secretary ,about to deliver a speech about the joys of family but his own (family) is a nuisance to live with at home .An unfunny slapstick comedy.

Segment two : the maid works in a strange home with sinister-looking people ;they forbade her to enter a mysterious workshop;but women are curious...It would have taken lots of black humor which desperately lack here.

Segment three: the maid works in a house where both dad and the son fall in love with her;the young lad hides naked ladies photographs in his Latin dictionary and the father hides erotic magazines under his pillow

Segment four is ,IMHO ,the only moment which enlivens a bit a dull movie.But you can't be wrong when your stars are Danielle Darrieux and Robert Lamoureux.An actress and a screenwriter,short of the readies ,are waiting for a Russian producer (and a lucrative contract). But they wait in vain and the only thing they can still do is commit suicide ;they try to find a way to take their own lives in the dictionary ,the one thing the bailiff has left them;they opt for gas ,but....

Segment five returns to slapstick comedy and it involves a "genial " forger (paintings).

In between the segments ,we make acquaintance with young people who lead a bohemian life and take Cagliostro's life to the stage ;the connection with the problems of the servant escapes me,I fear....

Etchika Choureau who plays the lead (and who resembles Italian sex symbol of the seventies Laura Antonelli)quickly fell into oblivion although her filmography includes relatively interesting works ("L'Envers Du Paradis" where she teamed up with Helena Manson (segment two) for the first time ;"Les Intrigantes " with Jeanne Moreau).Her career oddly came to an end with the part of the ugly Angélique's sister in the famous saga.

Second version of a less famous Gaston Leroux's novel;unlike "Mystere De La Chambre Jaune " or "phantom of the opera" ,it's no murder mystery.It's a cross between Dumas's "Conte De Monte Cristo" and Maurice Leblanc's "Arsene Lupin" .The director,Marcello Pagliero,forgets his social concerns ("Un Homme Marche Dans La Ville" "La P.......Respectueuse" and gives pure entertainment stuff.

Shot in color ,which in the French fifties was very rare ,"Cheri Bibi" (which roughly means "darling me" )begins with a young busker and a barker telling the beginning of the story and how much fate was hard on our hero.Drawings summarize the first act of the drama,polished off in five minutes.

When the story really begins ,Cheri Bibi is on a not-so-comfortable ship en route to Cayenne chain gang.All that follows is far-fetched to a fault and includes special surgery ,mutiny,imposture and a wife to win back.

Jean Richard plays two parts and he pulls it off with gusto while Raymond Bussieres provides good support as "La Ficelle " ,always at the beck and call of Cheri Bibi

Interesting

This biographical account of Bob Mathias's life up to and including his Olympic gold medals is more like a documentary or "real-life" TV show than anything else.

Track & Field enthusiasts will find it interesting. You certainly can't complain that the scenes of Mathias competing aren't realistic, seeing as he plays himself!
