Unusual funny and human comedy-drama

A sleeper that evidently few have seen recently, this unpretentious comedy-drama can take an honorable mention in the long list of prison films. An early Stanley Kramer production, it received critical acclaim but was not a box-office success. Nevertheless, it has good character acting, some very amusing scenes, and enough dramatic tension to hold the attention and set off the comic moments.

Don't be put off by the overly earnest opening, as the new, wet-behind-the-ears psychiatrist arrives at the prison hoping to reform the penitentiary system single-handed. Although Kramer reportedly had prison reform in mind in making the film, this movie is not about psychological theories, which are lightly passed over with buzz-word gobbledygook. It's not even about the good doctor himself or his research so much as it's about the six cons of the title, as they become human beings to us.

Speaking of buzz-words, the genial Connie's psycho-babble malapropisms are among the best of the running gags. The many funny scenes stand out against the grim realism of the penitentiary, shot on location at San Quentin. The comedy also contrasts sharply with the dramatic dilemma the "doc" must face between gaining (and keeping) the confidence of his six cons and learning too much to be healthy in the deadly reality of prison life. But overall this is a human comedy more than an edge-of-your seat drama.

There are excellent photographic moments using long wide-angle shots to dramatize the starkness of the prison environment, which contrast well with the friendly intimacy gradually established in the psychiatrist's office. And the movie gets an extra star for the fine score by Dimitri Tiomkin, famous for many much better-known movies from "It's a Wonderful Life" to "The Guns of Navarone".

It's well worth watching for this to come around on television, as you are unlikely to find it at your corner video store -- not available on DVD or VHS at the time of writing.

To forgive or not to forgive.

The great actor Raf Vallone stars in this melodrama about the brother of a murdered man who falls in love with and marries (not knowing the facts) Anna, the sister of the murderer. She is played with fervent sweetness and decency by Antonella Lualdi. The murderer Stefano had killed the guy, a guard at a Genoa port depot, when he and fellow gang members were pulling off a robbery. Stefano runs off to Venezuela. His sister Anna and his mamma don't know of his guilt.

At first the movie seems like it's going to be another "Il Cristo proibito" as Marco (Vallone) seeks revenge for his brother's killing. Then it turns into a domestic story of love and family life with the added complication of a whore/seductress in the person of the ultimately vicious Vera, played by Tamara Lees. Complications ensue when, after six years, Stefano returns, the law continues its pursuit of him, and gang members urge him to leave the country again. Stefano decides to inform the police and the men are rounded up. The spiteful Vera tells Marco the lie that his wife is unfaithful to him. Overwhelmed that her husband thinks she is an adulteress, Anna plans suicide by jumping off a cliff with her two little kids, but Marco, having learned the truth, rushes to save them in the nick of time.

There is something very excessive, banal, and third-rate about the entire story, although I found myself getting into it because of the performers, who manage to pull much of it off. Then too the backgrounds of Genoa, its port, and the environs of the city (reminiscent of René Clément's "The Walls of Malapaga") add a good deal of interest. The title of the film means "forgive me" and in watching it you might indeed have to forgive a lot. Then there are those who will choose not to forgive.

Considering it's age, a remarkable western movie.

Considering that this movie is almost 50 years old, it holds up quite well. Bridges, Adler and Cobb give striking performances in a tale set amongst a group of barren rocks in the Southwest. The plot moves slowly, building to an exciting climax. One of the best western movies of the 50s with a great musical score.

Delightful farce

This is a delightful farce about infidelity, fidelity, marriage and playing around. Don't expect nudity, but you can expect laughs, wit, imagination, excitement, and above all great humanity. If it were an American movie, it would be called a romantic comedy, but it is more than that. It is in the grand tradition of the comedy of manners which exposes the weaknesses of all the characters but still allows us to see them as deeply human. When the husband lusts after the famous courtesan, we see ourselves in similar moments. When the courtesan envies the married couple, we remember what it was like sometimes to be single and wish we weren't.

The cast, particularly the women, are excellent. The lovely Nadia Gray is more than capable of playing the courtesan. Fascinating, able to easily handle men, coquettish, she is wise but also slightly jaded, joyful but slightly sad and stylish but still longing for a simpler life without feeling sorry for herself. The real surprise and pleasure is Gina Lollobrigida. Gina has never been considered in the highest ranks of actresses, and in fact her talents do not quite ascend to that stellar level. However, she is certainly underrated. Considered simply a pretty face with a voluptuous body, she is also an intelligent actress with many moods and charms. Seeing her convincingly play a plain, unattractive wife is in itself an eyeopener. But then to see her transform herself into a beauty, is truly amazing. Mainly she does it by simply looking pretty or looking plain. There is certainly no CG or tricks with makeup. Her acting is also quite respectable as she plays a devoted and chaste wife who ends up in a sexually compromising situation. She is embarrassed but thrilled, confused but clearly has a natural way of pleasing men. She is innocent yet artful, naive yet clever, intellectual but clearly filled with unexpressed passion; in fact, she steals the show.

Gina is on my short list of actresses who are underrated, right up there with Tuesday Weld, and Hailey Mills. Nicolle Kidman used to be on this list about 5 years ago.

The movie was remade by Billy Wilder as "Kiss Me Stupid" which is also quite good in its own right and is historically significant for playing an important role in bringing down the Hollywood production code. "Wife for a Night" may not be a great movie but it is very entertaining. I'd give it a 6 but because of Gina's performance, it gets a 7.

Review :

The Passion of the Robe

The Robe (1953) is interesting on at least two counts: (1) the film takes its place as the first ever CinemaScope theatrical release and is therefore worthy of close study by all motion picture students; and (2) the film depicts the Passion of Christ, (as the inciting action that triggers the subsequent plot development), and as such, threads that part of the storyline with a genre stretching back over 1,000 years, where we find the first extant Passion Play scripts (other than the Gospel records themselves, of course). This again makes the film worthy of study by film students and theologians alike.

The story of Christ on film is more important historically than may at first might appear. At either two or three reels, the first ever full "feature film" is arguably claimed to be the "The Passion Play" (1898), filmed in New York in 1897. The 'greatest story ever told' has hit the screen regularly thereafter, perhaps most famously in recent years with Mel Gibson's masterly personal tribute, "The Passion of the Christ" (2004).

I will now comment briefly on some of the technical and visual aspects of "The Robe". The camera work majors on long shots, and it is interesting to analyse how each shot is framed for all that width of screen. The camera is mostly static, and shots have longer than average duration; the compositions really are not designed for a lot of movement. This gives the film that famous "epic" style that goes for the grand sweep, both visually, musically and emotionally. There is not a lot of internalisation within the characterisation - it is the (literal) width and scope of the production that grabs attention. The filmic style is not very personal, however. It really is as if we have the best seats in an outdoor drama on a massive stage.

As you view, you may wish to make a note of the shots that seem to work best to the modern viewer. In the early part of the film, for instance, (just before the "Passion" sequence), Demetrius runs toward the camera in search of Jesus, after he's been beaten down by the Roman guards outside the gates of Jerusalem. An old lady sitting behind him on the cobbled pathway, has just finished tending his wounds. The shot is terrific, and works for modern audiences very well. Unlike a lot of the film, where much of the direction seems to be subjected to the demands of the CinemaScope process, this shot contains a dynamism that beguiles the film's age. Why? Because it uses the three dimensions of the set, along with arresting and dramatic movement, as Demetrius runs diagonally toward the camera and beyond us, toward the Crucifixion, which we see in the next sequence.

Another sequence that really works well is the chase in the second half. It is arguably the most dramatic sequence in the entire picture, and certainly uses CinemaScope to best effect, as the horses thunder toward the audience. Over fifty years later, and it would be hard to better.

By contrast, most of the film is played out in tableaux form, with action taking place across the width of the screen on lavish but shallow sets. The camera is a passive observer, unlike modern 'epics', which usually use very fluid camera set-ups along with computer-generated imagery (CGI). The actual crucifixion (masterful in what it does not show, by the way) is indeed an actual still life tableau, and could have easily been lifted straight out of the Oberammergau passion play. I do not say this to put the film down - this actually is a brilliant move, as it makes the action faithful to the genre of the passion play, which originally was played out exclusively through short tableaux.

In this writing, my aim has been simply to help you consider alternative ways of viewing this, and other, historic motion pictures. Particularly, you may wish to take note of the sometimes unusual way the film uses: (a) framing, (b) shot length, (c) staging, (d) camera movements, (e) the use (or rather, the almost total lack of use) of close ups and 'cut-away' shots, (f) lighting, and the (g) music score and dialogue. Of course, there is much more to note: the use of dissolves and fades, which helps underline the 'epic' grandeur of every sequence. And I've not even touched on the story line or the acting. (Question: how might it have played as a silent movie?)

In today's post-modernist society, the Passion play formula, with its emphasis on objective truth, may well gain renewed importance, since the narrative of Christ's passion may be in danger of becoming yet one more voice crying in a commercial wilderness devoid of ultimate human (and Godly) values of truth, goodness and conviction. The story of Jesus stands out as unique however it is viewed. The simple reason: the story of the Passion indeed IS unique! (Which is one reason why I consider it a 'genre' in its own right.) I contend, therefore, that "The Robe" is an important contribution to American cinema, both theologically and cinematographically; one among a select number of motion pictures, spanning over one hundred years of history, that every student should have opportunity to view and discuss at least once whilst still in full time education.

A sidebar: "The Robe" really needs to be watched in 'letterbox' (i.e. in the original format), which on a small display does not do the picture justice. With HDTV coming along, look out for a digital re-release that will restore the original to its pristine glory. (Also, a side-by-side comparison with the Academy format version - shot at the same time - would be beneficial.) Best of all, of course, arrange to get it screened in your local art house cinema, and see it as it is meant to be viewed: on the big screen.

A Few Good Men To Capture A Meteor

This low budget science fiction film from the Middle Fifties is illustrative of just how far we've come in space travel. Now folks like United States Senators like Jake Garn and pop stars like Lance Bass vie for the privilege of space travel. It's proved to be quite a money maker for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

But back in 1954 there was no NASA. The Army, Navy, and Air Force all had rival space programs if you can believe that. It took Sputnik for the Eisenhower administration and Congress to create NASA in 1958.

A group of competent B players bring us Riders to the Stars and the object here is just a quick trip up in space to capture a meteor before it burns up in our atmosphere. One thing is certain, they somehow survive the Van Allen radiation belt that surrounds the Earth, a recent discovery that Riders to the Stars was capitalizing on.

Herbert Marshall heads the scientific team who are looking for a few good men and among those gathered are William Lundigan and Richard Carlson. Martha Hyer is around to be decorative as Marshall's girl Friday and to provide a little romance.

The best part of Riders to the Stars was the intensive physical training that is shown for these astronauts to be. Not unlike what was done in NASA for the original Mercury astronauts. You had to be one peak physical specimen to qualify back in the day. Not that you can have health issues now, but a 60 something US Senator Jake Garn has gone in space and pop star Lance Bass aspires to.

Riders to the Stars is educational, but a bit on the dull side. It really peaks in the last 25 minutes or so with the actual flight. Still it's an earnest film and worth a look.

Lana and Fernando...A Guilty Pleasure!

Lana Turner is "The Merry Widow" who goes to Marchovia to see her deceased husband being honored by his homeland. In the meanwhile, she hears Fernando Lamas singing at a party at an inn, where he and the band were staying. They were supposed to greet her at the train's arrival. But, the train was late. What she doesn't know is that the country's king, played by Thomas Gomez, only asked her there, because they are in debt and need financial aid, badly. Or else, another country will invade and make their small country a province. Lamas is, of course, the prince and he is ordered to woo the rich widow. Una Merkel has a memorable role as her companion, and then there's a case of mistaken identity.

I do admit that it kind of feels its age with its obvious corniness. Some may say it is better than "Latin Lovers." But I can see their separate good points."Latin Lovers", I think, comes off better with its well-written dialogue and scenario. But, "The Merry Widow" is much more romantic and is very expressive with the grand score and dance numbers, which is its strength. Also, the good looks and chemistry between the stars help. They were a couple at this point in their careers, and they were very amorous. So I've read here.

All in all, if you want to see Lana and Fernando and love the waltz and the music of "The Merry Widow", then this is for you. I personally watch it every chance I get. After all, like people, if you love them, then you can forgive their flaws. "Say it again." (Inside joke.) After all, like people, if you love them, then you can forgive their flaws. Watch "The Merry Widow" and enjoy, flaws and all!

A great oater

Rory Calhoun was a staple hero in all kinds of films during the 50s. His performances were always great, abetted by his handsome, rugged looks and the ease into which he fit into a number of hero roles. In this one, a kind of standard western, he plays an ex-lawman who returns to the trade when his partner is killed. During the time he cleans up the town, defeats bad guys played by veteran character actors Carl Betz and John Dehner, gets his semi-revenge, on the antihero, played by Cameron Mitchell, wows the French bombshell, Corinne Calvert and, of course, gets the girl. It's great 50s entertainment with a total lack of CGI action, extensive blood and gore and good honest villains and good guys. (*sigh) They just don't make movies like this any more. Watch for it on the late show. There's no DVD or video listed. Calhoun was always worth the price of admission.

Review :

Not bad historical drama, good showcase for Marshall

A history lesson in brief: The Haitian people, under the leadership of Toussaint L'Ouverture, overthrew French rule in the short term. After taking over in France, Napoleon himself was determined to reconquer Haiti and assigned this task to his brother-in-law, Gen. Leclerc. The film plot in brief: Albion Hamlin is a lawyer who goes to Haiti because he needs Lydia Bailey's signature on a document, and gets caught up in the continuing war of Haitian independence. Along the way, before Hamlin gets involved with Bailey, who is engaged to one of Leclerc's officers, he also befriends "King Dick", a Haitian revolutionary and patriot.

It is William Marshall as King Dick, with his considerable acting skill and imposing presence, who dominates the proceedings in a well-written, non-stereotypical role. The resourceful King Dick saves Hamlin's life on more than one occasion, and it is his stratagem, in which Hamlin impersonates a half-witted servant, that gets them within Leclerc's stronghold. There, the patriot's mission is to assassinate a traitor to the Haitian cause.

The film and television roles that were even remotely worthy of Marshall's immense talents came few and far between, and a certain stardom of sorts finally came to him twenty years later (in BLACULA of all things). The stage probably served him better, and I remember seeing his powerful portrayal of Frederick Douglass on PBS some years back, which seemed to be from a one-man stage show. His performance in BAILEY might be slightly less noteworthy but is no less powerful.

As for the leads, Dale Robertson makes for a rather stodgy hero as Hamlin, and while Anne Francis (as the title character) is a beautiful woman, she is not a strong enough actress here. Charles Korvin is also lackluster as Andre D'Autremont, Bailey's fiancee, who serves as a somewhat sympathetic villain. Their weakly-played triangle is deservedly dwarfed by the larger story of Haitian revolutionary intrigue, where Ken Renard puts in an understated but effective appearance as the great Toussaint.

By the time you get to the end of this film, you'll probably agree that it should be renamed in honor of it's most memorable character, King Dick. This was an auspicious film debut for William Marshall, and what a career he could have had if he had been allowed to follow it with different and better opportunities. A belated salute to you, Mr. Marshall, wherever you are.

Blurb.

Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida ("La Lollo") had been in a number of smaller films before this 1953 blockbuster catapulted her to international fame. The success of this rustic comedy spawned a sequel a year later: PANE AMORE E GELOSIA or "FRISKY. In BREAD LOVE AND DREAMS Gina plays Maria De Ritis, called "Pizzicarella la Bersagliera" or "Frisky" in the distributor's translation. She is a feisty country girl in southern Italy's Ciociaria area. During the course of the film she is pursued by the town's new "maresciallo" (local police chief), a lewd and lascivious woman-chaser played as only Vittorio De Sica could play lewd and lascivious, that is with great delight. At the same time Lollo is being flirtatious with the newly arrived young police officer from the north. Amorous complications ensue in what is essentially a modernized "commedia dell'arte" piece with performers of enormous appeal. The cast also includes Marisa Merlini as the midwife the maresciallo has an eye on as well. And there's the unique and marvelous character actress Tina Pica in a smaller role. Luigi Comencini directed both this film and its immediate sequel, which has much of the same cast, with great gusto.

Few laughs in throwaway farce from comedy great Frank Tashlin

Comedy director Frank Tashlin followed up his immensely popular and hilarious Technicolor western spoof, SON OF PALEFACE (1952), with MARRY ME AGAIN, a low-budget, black-and-white, unfunny farce about Bill Anderson (Robert Cummings), a Korean war hero who walks away from his wedding after he learns his bride-to-be has just inherited a million dollars. She had kept the windfall quiet because her fiancé had made a point only a day earlier at his welcome-home ceremony—over the radio no less—of insisting that he was to be the breadwinner for the family and that his wife would stay in the kitchen where she belonged. So we're supposed to feel sympathy for an obvious fool who doesn't recognize a good thing when he's got it. And it's not helped by the casting of Marie Wilson as Doris, the wife-to-be, played by Wilson in full "My Friend Irma" mode, a ditzy blonde character she'd played on the radio and in two movies with Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin (a team that Tashlin would direct to better effect in two films later in the decade). Wilson's Gracie Allen-style clueless act was getting tired by this point.

Granted, women were expected to stay home and raise families back then, but there's a desperate quality to Anderson's initial insecurity, even before learning of the inheritance, about letting his wife work as a secretary earning $75 a week when he will be returning to his gas station job at $65 a week. The ultimate resolution satisfies all parties and amounts to a happy ending, with a touch of then-relevant social conscience related to housing for veterans thrown in, but it never erases our uneasy feeling about Bill and his kneejerk insistence on denying Doris the right to what's hers.

There are attempts to create cartoon-style gags throughout the film, a specialty of Tashlin, a onetime director of some of the best Warner Bros. Looney Tunes. But none of these are particularly funny. E.g. during the hero's ticker tape parade through the San Fernando Valley (a locale conspicuously lacking the necessary multi-story buildings from which to throw ticker tape), Doris gets covered in confetti like a mummy. That's it. There's a fight at a theater during a 3-D movie that could have been developed and milked for more laughs. On the day of the wedding, there's a drunk scene in which the camera is focused entirely in a long take on the feet of two of the main characters as they get drunk at a bar and one of the men loses his shoe and puts his stocking foot into his fallen hat in order to walk out of the bar. That's the level of humor here. (A far cry from Bob Hope's bedroom scene with Trigger in SON OF PALEFACE.)

It's got a lackluster cast headed by future sitcom star Robert Cummings as the war hero/would-be groom and few supporting actors of note. Mary Costa, a pretty performer with some comic talent, plays Doris' best friend Joan, but was more famous as a singer ("Hollywood Palace"). (She was also Mrs. Frank Tashlin.) Her husband, Bill's friend and employer, is played by Ray Walker, who generally played bit parts and did a lot of television. Venerable character player Moroni Olsen appears as the crooked inheritance lawyer and the icily attractive June Vincent plays his partner/mistress, yet they are both underused and their potential threat to Doris' inheritance is never adequately developed. They're the ones who inexplicably alert the media to Doris' inheritance, despite her expressed wish to avoid that, and there's some farcical value in the way the local media (TV, radio, newspapers) broadcast the news widely yet fail to reach Anderson who misses the story all the way to the wedding. It's a situation ripe for laughs, yet it's never fully exploited.

Tashlin did much better work with Bugs Bunny ("The Unruly Hare"); Porky Pig and Daffy Duck ("Porky Pig's Feat"); Dick Powell and Debbie Reynolds (SUSAN SLEPT HERE); Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis (ARTISTS AND MODELS); Jerry Lewis solo (CINDERFELLA, WHO'S MINDING THE STORE?); Bob Hope (SON OF PALEFACE); Tom Ewell and Jayne Mansfield (THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT); and Tony Randall and Jayne Mansfield WILL SUCCESS SPOIL ROCK HUNTER?). I guess you can't win 'em all.

Happy Valentine's Day.

Chaplin's final American film tells the story of a fading music hall comedian's effort to help a despondent ballet dancer learn both to walk and feel confident about life again. The highlight of the film is the classic duet with Chaplin's only real artistic film comedy rival, Buster Keaton.

Review :

One of the best movies by Chaplin

Charlie Chaplin was without a doubt one of the most important pioneers of film-making, and through his life he saw the development of the cinema and its progress. "Limelight" is probably not as well known as most of his silent feature, but it is a very important film to understand the vivacious mind of this genius. It is a very personal film that showcases Chaplin's feelings about his own brand of comedy and how it slowly lost the public's attention as he grew older.

"Limelight" is the story of an old comedian named Calvero (Chaplin), who one morning discovers that his young neighbor Thereza (Claire Bloom) attempted to commit suicide. He decides to take care of her and discovers that she is a dancer; knowing that both share a passion for performing he begins to cheer her up and prepares her to become a great dancer while at the same time he remembers his past glories.

When one watches "Limelight" is impossible not to see the many autobiographical aspects of the plot, as in many ways, Calvero represents how Chaplin feels at the modernization of comedy on stage. Like Chaplin, Calvero also played the character of an optimist tramp who always saw the good side of life, and like Chaplin, Calvero faced many times the urge to modernize his act. It's kind of frightening to think about how much of Calvero's story could be based on Chaplin's real experiences as it is a sharp criticism (for its time) to the way performers are treated by both their managers and their public.

As the last of his "talkies" made in America, "Limelight" is done with all the power Chaplin still had (although the film would be banned as Chaplin lost his power due to his political opinions) and it shows. The stage performances of the characters are sublime and in Calvero's memories Chaplin resurrects a way of comedy apparently dead by the early 50s and makes it fresh. The Keaton/Chaplin duo is a classic moment captured on film. However, "Limelight" is not a comedy in the strict sense of the word. Those expecting a laugh-riot like "Modern Times" or "The Great Dictator" will be disappointed, this is a very personal melodrama where Chaplin his emotions about his career.

The acting is very good, Chaplin may be more remembered for his parts in silent films, but he delivers his lines with ease and ability. His physical comedy is superb and his overall performance is memorable (mainly because it feels as if he was playing himself). Claire Bloom is at times a bit too melodramatic for the movie's sake, but for the most part is very effective and makes a good counterpart to Chaplin's Calvero. Among the supporting cast Nigel Bruce as always chews the scenery and Buster Keaton is simply fabulous in his small yet classic role.

Probably "Limelight"'s main problem is its excess of melodrama, and its at times, excessively preachy attitude. The fact that is not a comedy may turn off people not used to Chaplin's more serious side, as while the movie has its fair share of laughs, it is obvious that Chaplin wanted to be recognized as more than a mere clown. The movie's slow pace and rhythm also put it closer to the melodrama of the 40s than to the image we are all used to see when we think of Chaplin.

Despite all this, "Limelight" stands as a testament of Chaplin's enormous talent, and while not very well-known, it is one of the finest films he ever did. Fans of his work will definitely enjoy this film and fans of Keaton will appreciate his small yet terrific scene. 9/10

When The Blunder For Plunder Has Gone A-Sunder

Even though American insurance adjuster, Al Colby (who was presently visiting Havana, Cuba) was somewhat of a disagreeable brute who thought nothing of shoving around both men and women whenever it suited his mood, he was still deemed so irresistible that he found not one, but two, sexy babes lusting after him as if he were the hottest hunk in tweed trousers.

With that in mind, I found Plunder Of The Sun (POTS) to be one of the most clichéd, predictable and, yes, decidedly dumb Crime/Adventure stories (with its preposterous double-whammy romance, thrown in for good measure) that I've seen, from the good, old 1950s, in a mighty long time.

Featuring some real goof-ball villains, annoying/boring femme fatales and various implausible (and highly laughable) situations, POTS' story about hunting for hidden treasure amongst the ancient ruins and pyramids at Monte Alban, Mexico, just didn't have what it takes to cut the mustard, from my point of view.

With its story being told mainly through flashbacks, including lots of voice-over narration by Al Colby (Glenn Ford's less-than-appealing character), POTS was definitely one of those movies that left this viewer quite dissatisfied and thinking to himself that this picture certainly had the potential to be a whole lot better than it was.

Even though POTS' running time was only a mere 80 minutes, it sure seemed to me that so much of the general action was all but worthless and easily forgettable.

As well, this film certainly lost a lot of its overall entertainment value by being filmed in stark b&w.

The many scenes that were shot amongst the Zapotec ruins near Oaxaca, Mexico, would have been so absolutely wonderful to behold had they been given the full Technicolor treatment.

And, finally, I thought that, as an actor, Glenn Ford was not at all well-suited for his part. Like, c'mon, Al Colby (that face-slapping heel) actually had 2 fairly hot women throwing themselves at him regardless of what dangers this might have posed to their immediate safety.

And, to me, that was preposterous beyond words.

Review :

A very contrived plot.

Wow...talk about your contrived plots! The film begins with Jerry and his female partner working on their stage act. Out of the blue, Jerry gets a cryptic letter--telling him her was needed for government business. When he goes to where the letter tells him, he finds out his old partner (Dean) needs him to help him put on some sort of show for the army. It seems that Dean is now a paratrooper and plans on having Jerry take on the identity of a guy in his unit so they can put on a show together. While this idea is ridiculous, it's even more so when Jerry is stuck in the paratroopers and cannot get out--even though he really wants to.

This film finds Jerry Lewis at his most spastic and even louder than usual--making you wonder how anyone could possibly mistake him for a soldier (or human)! In addition, because of the performing angle, there are a larger than usual number of musical numbers--along with dancing and other choreography. If you like this, you're in luck. As for me, this mix created a less satisfying sort of Martin & Lewis film. Fortunately, the film was saved (somewhat) by the notion of idiot Jerry accidentally succeeding and becoming a great soldier! But to me, this isn't enough to make this anything other than a loud time-passer.
