A Radio Guy Writes a MOVIE about a Possessed TV

Hans Conreid is one of my favorite character actors of all time, and here he is put to the test as a man whose wife has bought him a television to entertain him while she is away So many people don't get the point of this movie, and it really is quite simple considering the history of the time. This is in the infancy of television and the motion picture industry was suffering at the time because people found it was cheaper to stay at home for their entertainment. So what does the industry do? They hire Arch Oboler of radio fame to write a screenplay about an almost despotic TV set. It's pretty basic, and makes for a surreal and entertaining time. Think of "The Twilight Zone" with a sense of humor and you get "The Twonky Zone" basically. Just sit back and enjoy, and if smoke 'em if you got 'em. The Twonky will light it for you.

The Bali High equivalent of Flying High

On a scale of one to a million this rates about a 999,999 on the silly scale. In colour and with beautiful production values ROAD TO BALI made in 1952 contains as many up to date movie and social references as an encyclopedia written by Ludwig Von Drake. In a huge theatre these ROAD films must have lifted the roof with laughter, and as a DVD diversion in 2006 any of them can be a generous and loony mood lifter. There is actually many laugh out loud moments still to be had even if you weren't born or aware of life in the early 50s. THE ROAD TO BALI (pronounced "Bally" by Americans; "Barley" by the rest of us) is basically flat-out hilarious with quips and ad libs galore. Even if you cringe at Bing Crosby as I do, there is enough genuinely funny lines and situations and terrible gags to overwhelm you...much like THE PRODUCERS released this year insists we find it relentlessly dementedly funny. To me Bob Hope has always been Daffy Duck (Groucho Marx was Bugs Bunny) and it is his vaudeville lunacy that carries Crosby inbetween squabbling over Lamour and pushing through all parts of the set. This film has some excellent special effects, very admirable for '52. A hilarious cameo from Jane Russell is the cherry on the icing. Some big dance scenes are an added bonus. Fun fun and demented fun. What a year 1952 was for hilarious films (look 'em up).

MY Favorite Movie

this was Marlon Brando and Anthony Quinn at their best ---the entire supporting cast was superb.

Steinbeck hadn't written anything as powerful as this since he did his tale of the Okies during the depression. Zapata is truly one of the great heroes of the 20th century, and Brando captured this along with the frustration of trying to do the right thing and yet being hamstrung by the bureaucrats who manage to survive every change in government, no matter which way in turns.The final scene in the movie leaves Zapata as a legend --- did he die, or does he still live to help the millions of peons in Mexico.

Elia Kazan's direction was terrific.

Review :

A good script and superior cast make this an above average western

Wagner, Calhoun, and Robertson-a fine cast in a smoothly directed action/drama from the novel by Jack Schaefer(also wrote "Shane" 1953). The supporting cast of familiar faces, including Albright, Millican, and MacDonald round out this superior effort. If there is a fault in this one, it is the toned-down ending. The chance to really pack a punch is thrown away for a happily ever after conclusion. Too bad. But it is still a great watch.

Alpine soldiers return home, face more conflict.

(Some spoilers) "Penne Nere" ("Black Feathers") is set in Italy during the last crucial two years of World War II, after the Badoglio government had signed an armistice with the allies. Throughout the nation the original Fascist army was disbanded and soldiers were pretty much on their own. Most tried to find their way back home and hope for the best, although with much of the nation now occupied by the Germans, the situation would be precarious.

Our hero, Pieri, is a young Alpine soldier (they wear black feathers in their caps.) He is from the village of Stella, where much of the story unfolds, and is in love with Gemma (Marina Vlady.) Having made their way back to their village over the Alpine snows after the news of the army disbandment, the soldiers, with the townspeople, become engaged in an effort to prevent the Germans from blowing up a dam.

At the end of the war, the two lovers are able to marry and we see the arrival of their first child. The movie is splendidly photographed and some of the shots of the Alps and the snows and the village environs are terrific. Marcello Mastroianni , appearing quite young here, cuts a handsome figure. His voice is dubbed, however, by someone else, always a common practice in Italy. Marina Vlady as his girl is very pretty and suitable to the part. Guido Celano plays Olinto, Pieri's brother who is killed in a German ambush. Young Enzo Staiola, famous as the boy in De Sica's "The Bicycle Thief" plays Olinto's son Tonino who smiles a lot and is given a substantial amount of screen time. The direction is by Oreste Biancoli, better known as a screenwriter.

Although the film does not have any reputation as a major work, it is still a very interesting one and does not disappoint at all.

Over The Top...What A View!

This is Bette Davis in all her tempestuous, splendid fury and indignation. As Oscar-winning actress Margaret Elliot, she is now given the go by from her own studio in favor of younger Hollywood fillies like Barbara Lawrence who is thrown at the viewer like a new car off the assembly line.

Margaret Elliot is down to cases,bankrupt, with no prospects and is suffering the ignominy of seeing her former household possessions being sold on the auction block to satisfy her creditors,with rock bottom bids at that. Even her relatives are still putting the bite on her for monthly touches she can no longer provide, resulting in an explosive scene which only Miss Davis could deliver.

One of the most searing moments occurs when Margaret takes her "Oscar"(even more unsettling knowing that statuette is,indeed, one of Miss Davis's Best Actress awards) on a drunken odyssey through residential Hollywood. Behind the wheel,she grazes fenders, screams like a wounded banshee at motorists who happen to be driving on the same road as she is and lashes out verbally in front of the house where Barbara Lawrence resides. Her subsequent incarceration for DUI is as demoralizing as the clearly visible toilet inside the cell photographed in publicity stills.

'The Star' has a seedy look to it, which is desirable for this flick as we get a glimpse of Hollywood's underbelly during the early 1950's. One can almost imagine rows of palm trees rooted in used coffee cans with the scent of chicory mixed with cigarette butts. Even Miss Davis's wardrobe is downright frumpy, straight off the Woolworth's rack. Only when she does her screen test for an possible bit part in a movie does she try to project herself as a sexy tart with disastrous results.

The only jarring note to this movie is the appearance of Natalie Wood as Margaret Elliot's teenage daughter. She is bubbling with youthful enthusiasm, quite startling against this cynical, world weary backdrop. Sterling Hayden provides the obligatory beefcake and an ample shoulder for Margaret to cry on.

'The Star' radiates like the hood ornament on the Cadillac Margaret Elliot drives on approval before the studio dashes her dreams yet again and the repo man chases after yet another falling 'Star'.

Good Drama

Interesting but too overly dramatic film about a wife (Loretta Young) who suffers her second miscarriage and is about to give up on life when another tragedy strikes. While speeding to a meeting, she runs over a seven year old boy who becomes deaf to the wreck. Another man takes the boy to the hospital so the police don't know who hit him but the woman feels so guilty that she adopts the boy so that she can try and teach him to speak again. However, the police are still on the hunt for who hit the boy and the boy eventually remembers who it was. This film could have been a lot better had they toned down the crying moments. By crying moments I mean that this is one of those films that tries to make you cry every five minutes, which becomes quite annoying after a while. The scene where Young learns she lost her second baby is heartbreaking but other moments don't come off as good. Young is very good in her role, which requires her to be a snob, a heartbroken mother and a woman trying to do what's right with both the child and the law. Kent Smith is also very good as her husband who at first doesn't want to take in a mute child. The film loses some steam in the final act as things turn very stupid during one scene where the man who drove the kid to the hospital shows up at Young's house and starts a fight. The ending is predictable but touching.

Happiness is not a lark

Happiness, says the narrator at the end, is not a lark. And the film believes it, even though as he speaks the glimpses of children playing with kites and daintily placed chairs on the beach (echoing those set out earlier by Gabin in the back of his cart for the visiting prostitutes) continue to evoke the swirling compositional grace and elegance which mark the film's every moment. Far more unpredictable and radical than most portmanteau films, the highlight is the second story, which at first seems to be about a group of men who get together one night when the local brothel is closed, then follows the whores' trip to the country (with a delightful interlude on the train as they share the compartment with an old peasant couple and a randy salesman); then returns to the brothel - Ophuls' highly liberal camera ultimately pans deliriously around the windows from the outside as the place fills with dance, spilling celebration and delight. The many surprises of that story perfectly evoke the enormous span of human emotional experience; it touches on so many dreams of escape whereas the other two episodes, both much shorter and darker, remind us of the occasional price of such dreams.

Minor, unpretentious swashbuckler

Despite the title, this isn't really a pirate movie, though there are a few sequences set at sea in 16th-century sailing ships. Instead, most of the action takes place in a small kingdom in the Netherlands where the evil king is trying to squash a revolt led by his virtuous younger brother. The budget isn't big enough to give this story the "sweep" which it needs and both its direction and screenplay lack "flair," but the results still have a likable quality and the running time comes in at a brisk 80 minutes.

The usually-reliable Barbara Rush seems lost in this production but Carla Balenda, as a haughty Spanish princess, manages to make a modest impression. Every time she looks at John Derek she seems to be mentally stripping him down to the 16-century equivalent of a jockstrap. As for Derek, he looks appropriately dashing but despite his status as little more than a hunk of beefcake, he keeps all his clothes on throughout the movie.

Don C. Harvey gets to do a bare-chest scene when he's whipped in the king's dungeon, but the lashes are applied rather lackadaisically and there's no attempt to augment their sound. This flogging ranks 93rd in the book, "Lash! The Hundred Great Scenes of Men Being Whipped in the Movies." Not sure this is a goof, but following his "escape" from that dungeon, Harvey's shown lying on his back in bed, recuperating. On his back? But wouldn't his back be torn to ribbons by that whipping?

Routine but fun James Fenimore Cooper tale

Bloodless battle scenes are interspersed with fairly well-written dialogue scenes in this inexpensive (but in good 50's color) tale of Indians, French and English conflict. George Montgomery and Jay Silverheels ("Tonto") are dashing, and the first Helena Carter is pretty and plucky. Like a TV dinner served in a tin tray, this film is pure "comfort". I haven't read the book, but I'd bet that the plot is pretty close except for the love story (in Cooper, romantic incidents are usually mental but never become physical). If you know Cooper better than I do (I've only read "Mohicans"), please add a comment.

beautiful movie, one of the best biopics ever of a President

I keep waiting to see this again on TMC. I wish I had been around to see these movies when they were first released, on the big screen. How amazing it must have been. There are some good movies released today, but on the whole, they are more childish and less adult and certainly less well scripted than movies like this.

I find it a heart-breaker, and I cry my head off at the end. Charlton Heston and Susan Hayward are magic together, and this movie is magic as well. It points back to a time when yes, there were huge flaws in Americans, racism, etc, but they were on the whole a prouder race, and had more to be proud of, if you ask me.

Charlton Heston and Susan Hayward serve as markers of the definitive pioneer spirit of Americans at that time, and as such they deliver outstanding performances as flawed but real and strong people fueled by the idealism of an America in a time of self-discovery.

I wish they could make movies like this, full of heart and devoid of PC.

He is a high-priced divorce lawyer, also on vacation, and bicycling his way to Acapulco to "stay out of trouble." Thus begins a tour of Mexico by bus, bicycle, ox-cart and by foot and, before they reach Acapulco, he is accused of kidnapping Jean and both become the object of a nation-wide search. They also get adopted, along the way, by a whimsical Mexican orphan boy.

Review :

Light but underrated

Certainly not a work of art, but a little underrated. The story is thin and contrived, but really no more so than many highly regarded films. The writing has some nice moments and is pretty amusing in parts, especially the scenes involving the "Mexican cousins." This was the first film I have seen with Evelyn Keyes. She is compelling in an unusual way. Reading some background about her made it all the more interesting. Regarded as a perennial B- movie actress, she certainly had a fascinating Hollywood life, and her performance here is never bad and at at times very appealing. The movie also features some good character performances, especially the boy-crazy Mary Anderson and the very-Brooklyn Connie Gilchrest. All in all, an entertaining movie in my opinion. They can't all be award winners, and this one isn't, but it is light and pleasant.

Well made, sincere performances

Trivia buffs might not help but notice and ask, was this a Monogram Picture, an Allied Artists movie like on some lists, or a Warner Brothers movie like the new box cover seems to say? At one stage or another, I guess it belonged to one of them. The musical score and scenic locations at Bass Lake really add a great deal to a rather wooden plot where Hiawatha attempts to prevent war with a nearby tribe that's being provoked by murders one of his own tribal leaders has committed. Vince Edwards (TV's Ben Casey) seems at his best romancing Minehaha while he tries to locate his lost father from the other tribe. Yvette Dugay is magnetic in her part, but Victor Mature and Debra Paget they're not. The absorbing atmosphere just takes me to a different place and time so much to forgive any dullness or holes in the plot.

Almost, nearly.......

Directed by Jerry Hopper and starring Charlton Heston, Forrest Tucker and Rhonda Fleming, Pony Express is adapted from a story written by Frank Gruber. It revolves around the birth of the Pony Express and how it linked California to the rest of the United States, thus preventing it from becoming a separate republic. Buffalo Bill Cody (Heston) and Wild Bill Hickok (Tucker) are the principal characters in the formation of the St Joseph-Sacramento speed run that has long since passed into folklore. Very much a fictionalised account of the "Express" and its principals, this tale deals in an attempt to form a separatist movement from the Union and the trials and tribulations that Cody & Hickok go thru in order to successfully launch the "Express". Cue Indian attacks, with the Indians being armed by corrupt business men, and sinister plotting by the seemingly affable Hastings siblings (Michael Moore & Fleming).

A loose remake of the 1924/25 silent film of the same name, Hopper's movie suffers from being overlong and for spending too much time with the Hastings sub-plot. It's only when we get to the last quarter that the film gathers apace, until then we are left with only Heston's gusto and Fleming's sexuality to hold our attention. Director Hopper struggles to craft any energy from the number of dialogue driven set-ups, and even a Mano-Mano fight to the death between Cody and Yellow Hand (Pat Hogan) is undeniably flat. Thank god then for Heston giving it brio. A few years away from career defining roles, he seems to be enjoying himself and puts ebullient life into the film when it starts to sag. Fleming too is a highpoint. When not asked to lead off awful films like Bullwhip, Fleming was a more than capable actress, helped enormously by her sexiness and ability to own her scenes. She raises temperatures here considerably with one particular scene as both Jan Sterling (as Tomboy Denny) and herself each take a bath.

Thankfully the finale doesn't follow suit with what has gone before it, with Hopper gaining a little redemption with this action quarter. The momentum is built up as we approach the first "Express" run, a gunfight is well staged and the shots of the horses bolting along the plains are a joy; in particular one shot as man and beast speed off under a blood red sky (well done cinematographer Ray Rennahan). Then it's the inevitable showdown where Heston flexes his gun toting muscles and a surprise development earns the picture an extra plaudit. So a real mixed bag for sure then. Well worth a watch for Heston purists and Fleming lusters. And indeed for Western fans who are versed in the lower grade genre entries so prominent in the 1950s. But it clearly doesn't fulfil its potential and the snippets of good only further make one feel a touch annoyed once the end credit booms out from the screen. 5.5/10
