Betty In Blossom

This was Betty Hutton's last major film at Paramount and she gave her all playing Blossom Seeley. She looked beautiful and was singing better than ever. Blossom worked with Betty on the songs and movements. If Paramount ever releases this film on DVD, it would be a good idea to track down some of Blossom's early musical shorts and include them. Blossom's partner, Benny Fields, is played by Ralph Meeker and he does a fine job with his numbers. His singing is dubbed by Pat Morgan, but it's a good match. Betty wanted Frank Sinatra. Great idea. Too bad it didn't happen, but everything turned out quite well and it's one of my favorite movies starring my favorite bombshell. There are nearly 20 songs and maybe someday there will be a decent soundtrack released on CD. The 10 inch LP that RCA put out at the time was a very sloppy mix of Paramount studio tracks and RCA studio sessions. You can hear the splices.

The BEST 'Titanic' Movie..

The 1997 version was very pretty and had some pretty stunning effects, but this 1953 version had, by far, the best storyline, far better actors and was more engrossing all around. Barbara Stanwyck and Clifton Webb made a fine team and their story added so much to the tragic environment. The excellent acting made up for the dated special effects, though the long shots of the ship going down are quite good, even by today's standards.

Sounds good in theory, but in practice...

The country is named Lampidorra, and it's a tiny municipality in Europe, the smallest country in fact, kind of squished in next to Switzerland. It's so small, it makes Switzerland look the size of Mongolia. The citizens there have a thriving industry that has kept them going for years - the industry of smuggling.

A rich American buys half the country, and then dies. A grand search is on to find his nearest heir, who ends up being something like an Aunt's sister-in-law's nephew's second-cousin, twice removed. She travels to the country to sort out what's going on, and is shocked to see that they hold smuggling highly as their main source of income!

Sounds like a wonderful movie, eh? Good idea for a story line and somecomedy, and Dirk Bogarde in pyjamas. But the whole thing just isn't executed well, and it gets very trying after the first half-hour or so. The start is amusing, where it's narrated - telling you Lampidorra's history and also thanking the citizens for speaking English rather than Lampidorran during filming, thus wiping out the need for English subtitles! Overall though, only 5/10.

And there's no need to ask where it's shining from...

It would be nice to be able to discuss this film without having to refer to its politically incorrect depiction of blacks, but it's impossible to do so. The film, which is a remake of director John Ford's own Judge Priest from the 30s (in which Will Rogers played the title role), must have seemed curiously dated even when it was released, and feels like it was made in the early forties rather than the mid-fifties. Whether that's because of its outdated attitude towards blacks and the presence of slow, scratchy-voiced Stepin Fetchit is open to conjecture – it could just be that the fog of nostalgia that hangs over the entire work is the reason.

Charles Winninger makes an amiable old judge whose quiet wisdom puts to shame the hypocritically puritanical attitudes of his small town's people and the racist assumptions of an unruly lynch mob out to hang a blameless teenage Negro. The storyline is kind of meandering, reflecting the apparently relaxed pace of life in the turn of the century Deep South, and you do really get a taste of Southern gentility – whether accurate not. Its various sub-plots are linked together by the judge's bid for re-election, which serves to emphasise the importance of standing by one's principles no matter what the possible personal costs may be. Of course, the truth is Billy Priest is too good to be true, but I don't think anyone was out to make him a more realistic figure in this milieu than Santa Claus or God would have been.

John Ford's notorious sentimentality is in danger of becoming cloying at times, but he just about manages to rein it in at key moments. The film says as much about Hollywood's take on American social attitudes in the mid-50s as it does about the same in the Deep South at the turn of the century, which isn't in itself a bad thing. I suppose it's even possible that one day films like this will be shown in classrooms to demonstrate the gigantic positive strides made in the cause of racial equality in the latter half of the 20th Century. Better that than they are wilfully ignored in the name of political correctness.

Review :

Fifties production line western has it's moments.

Joel McCrea had made these his home ground and this independent effort, picked up by Warners, was pushed along by the amiable Robert Parrish who obviously found some elements more involving than others.

The dialogs between McCrea and Yvonne De Carlo, in her spotless Fifties outfits, are lifeless and often filmed against back projection. However when Tor Johnson opens the hatch to Florence Bates' waterfront dive bar with a back room full of drunken sailors that she's sold to shanghai-ing captains, thing pick up. The scenes are played for comedy and the smoke filled, low roof ship's hold decor is striking.

Easy to get nostalgic for a time when these came two a time in neighborhood theaters.

Review :

French death row depicted in anti-capital punishment movie

"Nous sommes tous assassins" or "We are all murderers" illustrates its anti-capital punishment theme by taking us inside a prison and inside the cells where prisoners condemned to be executed wait and live in fear. The movie doesn't preach. It depicts. Its indictment of capital punishment is mostly indirect. It goes beyond the inhumane aspects. The men who are the murderers and being murdered in the name of social order are, in one way or another, shown as pitiable wretches, unfortunates, misfits. For this reason, it is difficult to see that the threats they pose to social order demand execution. On the other hand, it is far from clear that lengthy imprisonment solves the basic problem of criminal actions.

Those involved within the system, the guards, the chaplains, the doctors, the officials, can't do anything about it. Society grinds on.

This movie is worth seeing, but it's not a classic. Every so often, a scene or a part of a scene rises to excellence, but too many times the screenplay doesn't gel. It may be that badly translated subtitles are partly responsible. The movie is only occasionally gripping, but does have its moments. Mostly one feels as if one is at a distance watching the torment of the prisoners. The dramatization is not top quality. It simply doesn't click the way it should. However, it has some outstanding moments when it focuses on the inmates as they are led to their executions. And Raymond Pellegrin is memorable, he's so neurotic and jumpy.
