A wonderful movie about a very brave lady.

I loved this movie. June A. gives a great performance of the underdog female fighting for her dream despite the obstructive male bastion of turn of the century medicine. I was especially moved by the wonderful actress who played Dr. Yoman. She performed the role with a demure yet powerful presence. She is also one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen on film. It is she who carries the day for June and all her gender. Sadly, I never heard of her before. I hope to find other work she has done through IMDb. What else made this film? No raw sex, no violence, no gruesome scenes, just a great story that makes you feel good in the end.Wasn't a young James Arness fine as the burley tattooed sailor with the dislocated shoulder? Mothers: show this film to your daughters.

A rarity well worth seeing

I saw 'After the Curfew' ('Lewat Djam Malam' in the Indonesian) at the 2012 London Film Festival, and it's a real rarity: an Indonesian film from 1953, set just after independence (granted just four years before). A former resistance fighter leaves the jungle and tries to take up the reins of his pre-revolution life, only to grow discouraged that the newly-independent country isn't the people's paradise he had been hoping for. The film is a bit preachy - even propaganda-y - at times; scenes of people enjoying a sing-song at a party go on far too long; and the continuity is a bit ropey (although the action is set over the course of just 24 hours, look carefully and you'll see the hero wears at least four different pairs of socks during it!) But for its novelty value alone this is worth seeing if you get the chance.

Frustrated love can lead to terrible unhappiness.

A penniless student and a wealthy man want to marry the same girl in 1890 Japan. The parents naturally think wealth should be chosen but the girl is only convinced after her mother tells

her the wealthy man will finance the student's studies. So the

girl thinks she is making a noble sacrifice by marrying the rich man. This ends up making everyone unhappy until a Hollywood

ending.

The depiction of Japan in 1890 is OK as is the acting. The film seems to be saying follow your heart and not your parents.

Mule in a rut.

Although I have always had a strong affection for the Francis pictures, probably because I grew up with them, I always found that the preponderance of military settings in the series was a little claustrophobic and cramped the potential for humour. (Consequently my favourites have always been Francis Goes to the Races and Francis Covers the Big Town). In Francis Goes to West Point I find this tendency to be at its most pronounced. Not only are we saddled with a military setting (and a confined one at that, so that there is not even the chance to open the story out a little), but as well as the usual mandatory romance between Peter Stirling and some Universal starlet, there is a another romantic subplot involving other cast members, and a hackneyed football sub-plot as well. For this reason I have always found this instalment the weakest in the series, an honour generally accorded to Francis in the Haunted House, but I'd take that over this any day. Pity that the opening scenes where Stirling saves a government plant from saboteurs didn't lead to some other kind of storyline.

Goodbye Monogram

I wish I could have met Ida Lupino. When people ask who you if you could have 6 extraordinary 20th century persons over for dinner, well, for me one person would be her. I think she is now one of the great unsung and unprofiled personalities in the film industry. Her life story would make a great tele movie (Hey, Mr Bogdanovich........). Ida Lupino has been the driving force in many fascinating noir films of the 40s and 50s. I can remember being saddened at seeing her reduced to a horrible part in a ghastly AIP film is the late 70s. She was bitten by a big worm at the kitchen sink. Ugh. I should have contacted her then as she died not long after.. more from the part than the worm too. From High Sierra, Roadhouse and the extraordinary RKO thriller On Dangerous Ground, Ida Lupino was often the producer and the lead actress. Later, with her husband Howard Duff they produced many now timeless noir dramas that are still very engrossing today. One of them is JENNIFER which I think is the last film with a Monogram Pictures copyright. Monogram changed the company name formally to Allied Artists in 1953 and JENNIFER has both company names on the opening credits. This is a superior haunted house thriller equally as scary as both The Innocents and The Haunting made 8 years later. Really chilling and very creepy, this tiny film is exactly the sort of really good film Ida Lupino made and was responsible for. Try and find it...you will always remember it and as I feel, much admiration for this great and almost forgotten actress/producer.

Set in early television, "3-D" thriller seems like early television

Though much less stylish to look and (and listen to), The Glass Web owes a debt to Michael Curtiz' The Unsuspected of six years earlier. Both movies take as their principal setting a live true-crime show – the earlier in the waning days of radio, the latter in the dawning of the television era. And both make use of the technology of their respective mediums to help unravel their plots.

Head writer of the crime show John Forsythe and researcher Edward G. Robinson are at loggerheads; Robinson finds Forsythe callow and slapdash while Forsythe dismisses Robinson, a former police reporter, as an old fussbudget. Both men, however, are carrying on with the same woman, a Los Angeles television actress ( Kathleen Hughes) whose interest in them is entirely mercenary – apart from the professional advancement she schemes for, she's always got a hand out for `loans,' which then escalate into blackmail.

When she turns up strangled in her apartment, there's little weeping or gnashing of teeth. Robinson proposes turning the solving of her murder into their season-ending cliffhanger, sure to cinch a skittish sponsor. Both he and Forsythe turn in competing scripts; one of them, however, contains details which could have been known only to the killer....

Set in the world of early television, The Glass Web looks and feels like early television. But upon its release it was part of the early-1950s Hollywood panic over the upstart rival medium, and featured one of the desperate gimmicks calculated to lure viewers back into theaters: 3-D. Fortunately, the projectiles that got early spectators ducking in their seats are confined to a few intense spates and today look rather quaint (even in 3-D, they'd look quaint). Director Jack Arnold went on to make at least two movies that have been enshrined as camp classics: The Incredible Shrinking Man and High School Confidential. The Glass Web is nowhere near so memorable, but it's diverting enough in a don't-expect-much kind of way.

Cuba Cubana - second of her comeback

Cuba Cubana is Zara's second of her film come back and it's very entertaining. It starts off with Robby Townsend , a reporter, played by O. W. Fisher, and his his news photographer assistant , Billy, played by Hans Richter, are given assignment to go to San Puerto Antonio in South America to report on an uprise,although it was shot in Spain. Both of them,once they arrive, go to the bull fights,in south America?, and Robby notices Arabella played by Zara, the Governor,played by Paul Hartman,is also at the bull fights,notices her and him beginning to talk to each other as Robby gets his watch stuck on Arabella's shawl. He has him investigated later on.Robby discovers later on that she a owner of a night club so he decides to visit the night club to see her ,right at the time he and his assistance have to report an uprising.So when he enter's the club she singing a song,a women of my age, I think that'the title. It's very tuneful. Well after the show he goes to see her in the back entrance of the club, she's now typing some business.She rejects him and billy shows up to let him know what they have to report. When they go to the uprising, between what looks like union workers and the police they spy on it from the roof top of a building. Once billy flashes his camera the police and workers notice they catch them both. A fight starts. Robby runs off while the other one is captured.Robby accidentally kills one of the workers trying to stop him from leaving. He goes back to Zaras night club with a head injury. She rescues him. Leaving a note behind in her room her servant notices it and later on send it to the Governor. Well from her servants discovery,he's wanted for murder so she hides him. but because of that message ,the other servant found out,from Robby,the governor gets suspicious and have the police investigated. she hides him in another part of the place so the police won't find him.They start having a affair , as she tries to find his innocents and get him out of the country. The Govenor some how finds out about him and captures him behind Arrabellas back. As shes trying to find out from the Governor the situation without him suspecting her involved in the hiding But some how He's found innocent or the charges are dropped and he leaves back to Germany ending the affair with Arrabella. This is a Good melodramatic love story although they didn't sync in the soundtrack the "olé ! olé ! sounds during the bull fight scenes for what ever reason. There is a dance number that the dancers also sing the title of the movie. Zara's night clubs are always mini theaters with vaudeville acts or so it seems but this is a good movie.
