Burr, Sinatra shine in obscure, thinly veiled biopic

Not at all bad. Meet Danny Wilson, a show-business melodrama with a lot of songs thrown in, betrays a distinct noirish tinge which darkens as the movie progresses. It's a thinly-veiled knockoff of the stories about Frank Sinatra's early days in show business – from the shrieking bobby-soxers to the extortionist contract that almost held him back. Obviously, it stars Sinatra, at a low ebb in his career before he had gained the imperial control of his later days as Chairman of the Board, and before he had assembled the legendary `cool' that, as much as his voice, was to become his hallmark.

Crooner Danny Wilson and his pianist/manager/buddy (Alex Nichol) are a couple of rough-and-ready slum-bred boys having trouble breaking into the big time. Through the help of a lounge singer they meet up with (Shelly Winters), they get a gig in a posh nightclub run by a mobbed-up entrepreneur (Raymond Burr). The catch is, Burr spots Sinatra's potential and demands half of his future take. A messy love triangle emerges, too, with Sinatra falling head over heels for Winters, who's smitten with the loyal square rigger Nichols. The plot points get connected with the arrival of Success, in the form of recording contracts, attendant royalties and even the movies.

Most arresting is Burr as gangster Nick Driscoll. An indispensable fixture of the noir cycle, where so often he played the Heavy Menace, here he takes on a better-written, more shaded role. In addition, he's slimmed down drastically, and the slimming brings out his huge and expressive – even seductive – eyes. But he still doles out the menace, even if it's cushioned in unaccustomed suavity. Apart from Sinatra, he's the most memorable actor in the film (certainly more memorable than the generic Nichol).

Sinatra performs several of the hits which were to enter his standard repertory; he also duets with Winters in a patter-song. Meet Danny Wilson remains strangely obscure, but, despite a warm and perfunctory wrap-up, it's a better crafted and more solid outing than many of the movies he made in his pigs-in-clover Rat Pack days.

A story of corruption, redemption, hate, envy, miracle, faith, which gets straight to one's heart.

ATTENTION, SPOILERS – A great movie, in my opinion, by virtue both of direction and actors, as for the themes it deals with. The very title reminds of the story of the Magdalene of the gospels, a perverted woman, who was converted by knowing Jesus, and radically changed her life. What more, she was chosen by Jesus to be a witness of His resurrection. The Magdalene of this movie is very interesting: she is not only a prostitute who, by making that work, has learned to despise herself like her customers despise her, but she is also a woman who has a down on God because of the death of her child (a girl 7 or 8 years old). In real life she's not the only one who feels like that. Despite this, grace touches her heart many times in many ways, until her icy heart melts, her anger cools off, and she steps, in tears, to repentance. Though the director tells about conversion and repentance, about miracles and grace, does not shoot a movie of mushy feelings and honey. Evil exists, human nature was damaged by the original sin, and it would be hypocritical to deny or minimize it. In fact the people of the village are depicted in all their wretchedness and hypocrisy. Envy and pride reign over them, and the priest vainly tries to bring them back to a more Christian attitude. Gossiping is the favorite sport of the women. Furthermore, none of them seems to have learned from the gospel's episode where Jesus saves the adulteress from lapidation. Only an horrible and irreparable misdeed can open their eyes, and make them take off their hat. Even the slanderer realizes what he has done and repents. Very intense and touching is the scene where Magdalene dies among the arms of the priest. It is a very well made, well acted movie, shot through with real faith. We miss today catholic directors like Genina very much, because it is a long time that directors who declare themselves believers shoot fake, superficial, artificial movies, full of mushy feelings. This movie, instead, is very true and sincere.

In 1865, a troop of Confederate soldiers led by Major Matt Stewart attack the wagon of gold escorted by Union cavalry and the soldiers are killed. The only wounded survivor tells that the war ended one month ago, and the group decides to take the gold and meet their liaison that knew that the war ended but did not inform the troop. The harsh Rolph Bainter kills the greedy man and the soldiers flee in his wagon driven by Major Stewart. When they meet a posse chasing them, Stewart gives wrong information to misguide the group; however, they have an accident with the wagon and lose the horses. They decide to stop a stagecoach and force the driver to transport them, but the posse returns and they are trapped in the station with the passenger. They realize that the men are not deputies and have no intention to bring them to justice but take the stolen gold.

Scott-Huggins, almost as good as Scott-Boetticher

This was the only film directed by Roy Huggins, after that he went to television where he was responsible for Maverick. This film came out so good, that if Maverick would not have been such a success he probably would have made more films with Scott.Lee Marvin is excellent, already showing us he had quite a future. The story is about confederate soldiers on a special mission, attacking the Union soldiers and taking their gold, only to find out the war was over. They hide themselves in a house together with Donna Reed. Most of the film is about them resisting an attack while inside the house. There are many shootouts, a tense atmosphere throughout the film. The films made later by Boetticher had a lot in common with this one.

Anchor is building a railroad and to get cheap labor he gets Black Hawk's Indians to attack and burn the incoming wagon train. This forces the settlers to work for Anchor and he pays them in devalued scrip. When Rex figures out Anchor's swindle, Anchor gets Black Hawk to capture him. When Anchor turns on Black Hawk and shoots him, Black Hawk gets a chance to repay a debt to Rex.

Overboard in villainy

The presence of Leonard Nimoy as a hotheaded, but not terribly bright Indian chief is what makes this Rex Allen western any kind of memorable. It's not one of his better efforts and the script kind of wanders all over the lot.

Roy Barcroft is a rather greedy villain in the sense that he thinks all people are rubes, white and red alike. He's building a railroad in partnership with Gil Herman playing Rex Allen's brother Jim.

From the start I'm really thinking Barcroft is all over the map. He needs cheap labor for his railroad so what does he do, stir up the Indians with a few guns, promise of more and a lot of liquor. He talks Nimoy into an attack on a wagon train of settlers, kill a few of them, then break off the attack. With the train burned and provisions gone the settlers will work for wages to replenish their train.

Sounds good so far although Rex Allen is mighty suspicious about an Indian attack that breaks off suddenly with no apparent reason. And the Indians as a rule don't go in for limited victories. Rex is the new Indian agent sent out by the federal government to see who's stirring things up. Little does he realize he's going to get into a bad situation with brother Jim.

Not only that Barcroft who presumably wants to get his railroad finished starts robbing the payrolls and issuing scrip that store owner Harry Harvey, Sr. will only pay 25 cents on the dollar. That's no way to build a railroad. Are you surprised that it doesn't get built?

Slim Pickens is Rex's sidekick again who has a negative view of Indians and his usual leading lady Mary Ellen Kay is along for the ride.

I think the writers went a lot overboard in Barcroft's villainy. It makes Old Overland Trail somewhat incoherent.

While far from Flynn's earlier successes, one of the few bright moments in the latter half of his career

During the 1950s, Errol Flynn was a full-fledged alcoholic who was just counting the days until liquor would eventually take his life. As a result, he looked extremely old and puffy in these films and the overall energy level of the films were very low. Sadly, like Alan Ladd, his career was cut very short because of the drinking.

Despite this, MASTER OF BALLANTRAE is one of only a few shining moments in an otherwise drab decade for Flynn. Now this isn't to say the film is great and I am sure that had Flynn made the film ten or twenty years earlier it would have been better (as often he looked a bit drunk and immobile), but it still was enjoyable and held my interest.

The film is based on a Robert Louis Stevenson novel by the same name--a story very similar to another famous work by Stevenson, "Kidnapped". Like this other tale, they are set in the period immediately following the defeat of the forces of Bonny Prince Charlie after the Battle of Culloden. This time, Flynn plays a brother forced to leave his homeland because those loyal to the Prince were being rounded up and executed. I am actually glad the film left Scotland, as the pirate sequences were exciting (even if the Tortugas look nothing like they do in the film--there are no mountains on these barren islands off the Florida Keys).

In addition to a sluggish but acceptable performance by Flynn, he was very ably supported by Roger Livesey--the only actor in the film who really came off as exciting or three-dimensional.

A fresh, down-to-earth feeling to filmmaking.

Generally credited as one of the pioneers of independent cinema (as far as making your own film your own way and still getting seen in theaters), Morris Engel used his background as a New York City photographer to bring a fresh, down-to-earth feeling to filmmaking. Engel and his wife, photojournalist Ruth Orkin, wrote, directed, produced and edited their own low-budget films, shot by Engel using a hand-held 35mm camera of his own design.

The first of their three films, LITTLE FUGITIVE, is a beautiful, innocent film about a seven-year-old boy who is tricked by his older brother and runs away to Coney Island with six dollars. As the boy interacts with his new world on the boardwalk, Engel really transports the viewer there. The film feels like a documentary: sparse dialogue, realistic acting, hand-held cinematography and real locations. The FUGITIVE actors and atmosphere never come off fake: as the boy is hitting baseball in a batting cage, one hit ball flies towards the camera and you find yourself jumping out of the way!

The actor doesn't stop with this film "mistake", he's having fun and keeps going. All the childhood loves are there: bottles in the sand, hot dogs and cotton candy, ponies and parachute rides. With their films, Engel and Orkin created folklore, paving the way for directors like Truffaut, Godard, Cassavetes and Leigh.

FUGITIVE was successful for a non-studio film in the '50s, playing to over 5,000 theaters.
