cold war romance

Clark Gable and Gene Tierney are teamed in "Never Let Me Go," a 1953 film. An American news writer, Philip Sutherland, (Gable) falls in love with a beautiful ballerina Marya, (Tierney), but she isn't allowed to leave Russia with him, despite being given an exit visa. A desperate Gable devises a plan to smuggle her out. British star Kenneth More plays a friend, Steve, who helps him, and Richard Haydn and Belita play another couple in similar circumstances.

Gable went through a tough time post-war - he returned from the service a widower, in the shadow of Rhett Butler, and well into his forties, older than many of the leading men who had gone into the service. Men his age had stayed home. Also, MGM hadn't been sitting around waiting - they had new stars. His immediate films post-war aren't memorable.

"Never Let Me Go" is a good romance, however, and a good watch. Gene Tierney is beautiful, if not very Russian, and Gable is earnest and sympathetic as a tough guy who will do anything to reunite with his wife. Thanks to some good acting, one feels invested in these characters.

You have to give it to Gable - his first credited film was in 1931, and when his last film, The Misfits, was released in 1961, he was still a huge star. Despite some so-so movies, he never lost his appeal. "Never Let Me Go" is better than a lot of films MGM gave him during this period.

The Toff solves the mystery of a missing employer.

When the going gets tough, the Toff gets going

The only John Creasey books I've ever read are those relating to The Baron of which he wrote loads under the pseudonym of Anthony Morton – but he also wrote 59 Toff tales of which sadly I've read none. The Baron was very similar to Leslie Charteris's creation The Saint - so was The Toff except he wasn't such a shady character. Instead of leaving a calling card with a drawing of a halo on it, his depicted a caricature of a toff in a topper. Only two Toff stories were ever filmed both of which were on the BFI's 75 Most Wanted Missing Films list; the sequel Hammer The Toff was filmed at the same time as this and is still missing. This was a lively adaptation of a story published in 1941.

A gentleman is being closely watched from the mantelpiece in a guzzling smoky East End pub by some less than gentlemen, he leaves, is tailed, is murdered and his corpse carted off to an apartment. So far, so good – then a pretty young secretary comes to the Toff to help her find where her missing boss has disappeared to and the story starts to get complicated with comedy, romance, missing persons, fraud, embezzlement and more murder. It's reasonably enthralling as a story and within a strict Nettlefold Studios budget competently handled. But a film with a lot of Wally Patch in is always a joy anyway. It brings back a less complicated world we thought was impossibly complicated and which was doomed to die either from the h bomb or cynicism. I couldn't fault the affable John Bentley playing the Toff – but with his butler played by Roddy Hughes they reminded me more of The Lone Wolf. The ever-bullish Peter Bull played one of the baddies, a slimmer Peter Gawthorne is here in one of his last films as another while the incredibly skinny Tony Britton makes one of his first appearances. Hollow voiced Valentine Dyall as a detective played The Man In Blue. The little romances don't even get to the kissing stage which is always a big help in action films.

As far as I know I've never seen this before – it's dated, corny, low budget but adequate and full of old friends; I really enjoyed it and will hopefully see it again with the sequel!

The dying man reveals that Clay has murdered a man. The brothers slog through the swamp fighting off alligators, snakes and the plot and come upon a widow and her son whom the Seminoles, who control the Everglades, have allowed to stay. She agrees to let them stay when Clay is bitten by a poisonous snake, and a romance develops between her and Dan, while the recovering Clay plots a few schemes of his own. When the Seminoles discover the presence of the brothers, all are forced to flee through the Everglades with the Seminoles in pursuit.

Review :

Interesting adventure tale, hampered by poor production values.

Cochran and Stevens are brothers, pursued by the law through the dangerous Everglades, during the Civil War. The accent is on action as the duo encounter swamps, alligators, Seminole Indians and a captured white woman (Matthews). While the storyline is interesting, the obvious low budget and use of stock footage are distracting. An interesting artifact, considering the cast.

character development

You'll never know who these people really are in this movie. They have no background. They just appear in the Empire State Building in order to get the story rolling. And roll it does. It's a very superficial, pretty inconsequential, and funny comedy. Who cares who the characters are or were, anyway? The thing most important is physical and sexual and all the jockeying that goes on before the relationship reaches that point. It turns out to be a comedy-writer's paradise. Of course in the end they will get married to at least throw a bone to social mores. Holden is near top form and Niven, as his older upstairs neighbor whose daughter was Holden's girlfriend, is classic.

Tries Too hard to imitate Edgar Wallace

One of Edgar Wallace's trademarks was to have a gang of criminals led by an unknown person who went by such nicknames as "The Frog".In order to let us all in on the fun we would have a disguised glimpse if the head of the gang so that we could try and workout who was the ringleader.Here we are given no such help.We see a number of what are on the surface some unrelated incidents which of course in the end lead us to the head of the gang.I found that after the first couple of murders i became rather uninvolved and couldn't really care who was the chief villain.the film has a very decent cast but unless you are into this particular genre it is actually rather a bore.

Parineeta

I personally feel about Parineeta which was originally made by Bimal Roy to be the true classic.Its rather ironical to see that modern India has woken up and applauded the 2005 version of Parineeta made by Vidhu Vinod Chopra.But the actual classic is much more realistic and brings the true romance of the "Fiance" and Bimal Da has brought the characters right out of the novel and closest to the human relations.

However if one compares the roles of Sekhar in both the films,i feel Ashok Kumar has portrayed this character with such a elan and a rebel at times,though Saif Ali Khan looked very kiddish and an amateur in this role.

As of Lolita,I cant think of anyone else but Meena Kumari justifying this role with compassion and ethos.

I would recommend to see Bimal Da's version first and then go for the 2005 version of the same film.

A 10 for sentimental reasons.

An interesting note- Tom Morton, who plays Tony Monaco in the film, toured in the national company of I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE under the stage name of Tony Monaco. This film is a theatre-lover's delight for so many reasons, my favorite being Tallulah Bankhead yelling at Agnes Moorehead "Aren't they writing plays for nice people like ME ANYMORE?!?!". Other people appearing in the film not listed in the cast or in the other posts include Al Hirschfeld at work on one of his drawings, Regis Toomey as a policeman, Lydia Reed back-stage with Helen Hayes at MRS. McTHING, Constance Carpenter backstage at THE KING AND I, first-nighters Maureen Stapleton, Joan McCracken, Vivian Blaine, Paula Lawrence, Sam Jaffe, Dolly Haas(Mrs. Hirschfeld), Nedda Logan, Dorothy Rodgers, Dorothy Hammerstein, and best of all Estelle Winwood, providing the gem, "Tallulah's got a wonderful heart- only sometimes it pumps the wrong way." Oddly, Henry Fonda is always credited with a cameo, but I don't see him in the VHS print. This may be due to the fact that some changes in personnel and plot happened along the way, probably with the involvement of MGM. Originally, it was to be Henry Fonda and Olivia de Havilland who bail Tony out of jail, not Louis Calhern and Ethel Barrymore. The Faye Emerson radio broadcasts were written to be done by Arthur Godfrey. The Gertrude Berg character was originally named "Mrs. Donatelo", probably to be more Italian than Jewish. The playwright's name was originally Tony Fletcher, not Tony Monaco. Even then-mayor Vincent R. Impellitteri (another first-nighter) was to get into the act with a climactic car chase on the Pulaski Skyway involving himself, Tony and Mrs. Danotelo pursuing Mary and Frank on their way back to Indiana, while in New York, THE PLAY IS A SUCCESS!!! Don't ask.
