Review :

Charming and rueful

OKASAN is one of the rare instances when Naruse was able to create a film with a little more humor than usual; for this reason, this study of an adolescent girl and her mother has moments of great charm, even though the general sadness which pervades so many of Naruse's films cannot help but add dimension to the story. The ending of the film is more upbeat than is usual for Naruse, and so the effect is bittersweet and rueful, rather than despairing and sad. It's a film full of delicate touches of great tenderness; it's a film that really does celebrate motherhood, though in a very unsentimental way. Though Naruse does emphasize the problems of the family, he allows the affection that the family feels for each other to texture the film with a feeling of genuine warmth. This remains a very special film for Naruse for this reason.

Rhonda was hot and feisty

Kit Gerardo (Hayden) has a strong motive to get revenge over his mother's death, carrying the quest for twenty years against Captain Luis Del Toro; but when an opportunity arises, instead of killing the man, he collects a ransom from a prisoner he holds, which happens to be Del Toro's fiancée. He also battles other foes, some of which were on land while riding horses after getting commissioned by a French leader to destroy the Spanish settlements - in return he and his men can be rewarded with land to settle on.

Rhonda Fleming was Captain Rouge, and she was a pirate; but this was not discovered until after the first 30 minutes. Now that delay had some circumstances for her, and would have been okay if she still would have maintained her Captain's status, giving off vibrations that definitely could put a man in erection city; but she soon ends up back on her plantation, becoming a victim to Kit Gerardo's men who are on that mission to destroy settlements … stoking her hatred of men.

Part of Hayden's character was to be a lover, and he passes the test since he does not overdo any charming routine. His success with women sure does take a nose dive, though; he finds that the fiancée and Captain Rouge are women who sure are fickle: one minute they want Kit Gerardo dead, and the next minute they want his loins … all this in the midst of a twist in the story.

There were believable characters, authentic clothes, villages … good fighting scenes, and beautiful mature women - a pretty good swashbuckler for only half of the movie being filmed at sea. The reason I gave it a 7 instead of an 8 was because of Rhonda's character not staying in her pirate's mode.

I feel sorry for those involved

TCM showed this film in a tribute to Paulette Goddard and the 100th anniversary of her birth. What a lousy film. I guess it's supposed to be a comedy but I didn't laugh one time.

It a collection of vignettes about different women who buy & wear a particular dress to help them achieve goals. The first story, starring Eva Gabor, is about a woman who uses rich men to attain a certain lifestyle. The second, starring Goddard, is about a secretary trying to woo her boss away from his shrew of a wife. The third, starring Marilyn Maxwell, is about a woman trying to get her husband a promotion. The fourth, starring Barbara Lawrence, is about a girl turning 21 who is trying to get a marriage proposal out of her long time boyfriend. The men this dress is supposed to "seduce" are Tom Conway, Leif Erickson, Cecil Kellaway (?), and Robert Hutton. And the dress isn't even all that great. It's a horrible premise for the film, or at least it wasn't used in the correct way. The dress starts off as couture and ends up as a purchase from a Thrift Shop.

The actors, especially the women, deserved better. Oh, and on top of all this, somehow Prince Michael Romanoff, the owner of the eponymous restaurant, got a small part in the film. What a waste--of time, talent and imagination. Skip it unless you're a completist for any of these people.

Steve Cochran Rides Wildfire

Wild horse training cowboy Steve Cochran (as Ben Kirby) wants to keep a beautiful black stallion for himself, but the animal is sold to a rodeo showman. He finds "Wildfire" being abused by owner Ray Teal (as Dave Tracy), who won't sell. After leaving a refused $600 payment for the horse, Mr. Cochran sets him free. Later, Cochran trains Wildfire while working for Utah rancher Harry Antrim (as Cas Bagley) and bonding with his cute pigtailed granddaughter Sherry Jackson (as Jenny). The family-friendly trio is threatened by a nasty lion and the return of Wildfire's angry owner... There are some spotty production values, but "The Lion and the Horse" gives you a great look at Cochran in an appealing leading role.

Charles Starrett makes his final appearance as The Durango Kid, this time as Steve Reynolds, a postal inspector who has gone underground to catch the bad guys. His longtime sidekick, Smiley Burnette appears as an itinerant optometrist who is hardly in the plot line of the film. Jock Mahoney plays Jack Mahoney, an eastern educated dude who has come back home. The Durango Kid teaches Jack how to draw and fire a six-gun, and the two ultimately work together to bring the outlaws to justice. Evidently, the director, Fred f. Sears, and the cast had made this picture so many times they could not invent a new ending. At the end Smiley addresses the audience directly and assures us that everything turned out all right. He is puzzled, however, why Steve never got to meet The Durango Kid.

Smiley who...?

Not being a fan of, or knowledgeable about, cheap B Westerns, I was about to give this film a devastatingly bad review. Fortunately, I had the sense to do some research, and discovered it was the last of a series of Columbia programmers about "The Durango Kid". That doesn't make it any less bad, but at least the film gains some... provenance.

Smiley Burnette is featured in a highly unnecessary role, which includes singing a song he (probably) wrote, "It's the Law". Burnette was at one time a popular sidekick, but unlike (say) Gabby Hayes, is hardly remembered. * It's films like this that might explain why.

Hayes was a good actor who could convincingly play serious roles; Burnette is there strictly for the laughs. Not only does he appear in court dressed as a woman to deliver fake testimony, but when he's accused of wasting the court's time, he sings "It's the Law" wearing a dozen costumes, both male and female. (One suspects this sequence took longer to film than all the rest of the picture.)

Even given that this is a kiddie Western, it's unintentionally risible throughout. Burnette calls armed men "gunsels", the writer apparently not knowing what the word //really// means. And Dixie's riding outfit has to be seen to believed. One can only hope the costume designer was deliberately being campy (rather than believing there was anything historically accurate about it).

"The Kid from Broken Gun" is a laff-riot that, at a very brisk 55 minutes, doesn't wear out its welcome. An ideal "party film".

A great man,a poor movie...

Albert Schweizer ,whose work is more famous abroad than in his countries (the plural is necessary for he was born in German Alsace ,then French citizen after WW1),was one of the great men of the last century,on a league with Ghandi and Martin Luther King.All his life was dedicated to doing good ,to relieve human sufferings .His enemies were yellow fever,leprosy ,malaria...And he knew that he would not,could not,for any reason,kill his brother.

This is minor quibble to mention the historic mistakes:Schweizer was not arrested at the beginning of WW1 ,but in 1917.Father Charles de Foucault,who,after a racy past ,became a saint ,is featured in the film but he was killed in 1918,by Touaregs.

Pierre FResnay was certainly one of the greatest actors of the French cinema.He was a wonderful "Monsieur Vincent" (in Maurice Cloche's film about Saint Vincent de Paul).But he almost became ridiculous as Albert Schweizer with his mustache,his fake Alsatian accent and his ham acting.Abetted (so to speak) by bombastic directing (turgid music) and a poor script,he makes the potentially absorbing story drastically boring.

Jeanne Moreau in her prime appears as nurse Marie.

Based on Gilbert Cesbron's eponymous play ;the title means "at midnight,you will be arrested ,Dr Schweizer ": He was an Alsatian,thus an "enemy" for the French!

don't bother

3-d scenes always stand out as being solely for that purpose; the best one in this flick is doubtless the cops in the snap-the-whip ride in the amusement park. None the less, these oddities do not redeem "Man in the Dark", a true B-flick, which suffers from a hackneyed script and college drama society acting. I like Edmund O'Brien but he can't rise above this material. Interesting period footnote: the flick contains the best example I've seen of what used to be called a "zoot suit", a type of outfit favored by thugs, real and aspiring. It is worn by Nick Dennis as Cookie (the short guy; he went on to play Dionysius in "Spartacus").
