Doctor in Trouble...

Though the 1970s were the heyday for British TV spin-offs, author Francis Durbridge's serials, notable for each episode's cliffhanger ending, were among the first to transfer to the big screen twenty years earlier.

Here, Mark Fenton, a hospital doctor or possibly consultant as he is addressed as Mister, becomes ensnared with the double-dealing members of a crime ring after falling for the glamorous Della Freeman. Fenton appears to have more time on his hands than most members of his profession and he appeared in a similar adaptation OPERATION DIPLOMAT, played by Guy Rolfe. A likable cast includes Robert Beatty, with his decidedly Canadian accent as Fenton, while Elizabeth Sellars, an excellent and somewhat under used actress plays Della, looking classy and elegant in a sumptuous array of furs and hats. There's also two celebrated specialists in sinister foreigners for British films and TV, Ferdy Mayne and Roger Delgado.

The only film of Director Martyn C. Webster, a BBC radio producer whom had worked with Francis Durbridge on the Paul Temple series starring Peter Coke; he ensures it gets off to a flying start. Durbridge's thrillers and series were always gripping and enjoyable despite his over use of certain plot devices. See for example the similarities in a more polished adaptation of his work, Gerald Thomas's THE VICIOUS CIRCLE (1957), also featuring a doctor in trouble.

Good But for "the Soft Plash of Cognoscenti Being Sick in their Hats"

(The quote above is from a review of a concert where Robert Shaw conducted Bach's mighty B-Minor Mass, then followed it with some spirituals for encores.)

A lot of water has crashed over the dam in sexual relationships since this movie was released 53 years ago. Yes, the sexual frankness is a bit higher than we expect, about at the level of "West Side Story" (a woman in her slip sitting up in bed), but the notion that two people can simply fall in love and move mountains to maintain that love seems pretty quaint to us today. You will groan at some of the clichés the lovers spout in the process.

And speaking of "West Side Story", oh, my, there's a lot of "Romeo and Juliet" here as well. There's also a bit of "A Farewell to Arms", but I won't specify what, so's not to spoil.

Well, the film satisfied a craving in the audiences of its day, and we can watch it even today with interest, though it's not particularly compelling anymore. There's good pacing, good film-making, very plausible visuals, and a great crescendo of almost Hitchcockian excitement toward the end, but the plot also depends on some very weak twists to pull it through, I'm afraid.

I stopped the film about ten minutes from the end, and asked myself, "It appears they'll either make it, or they won't. Do I care?" And yes, I had to admit, I was invested in it at that point. I cared. And so I played it, willingly, to the end.

Jeff Chadwick is a surgeon and researcher who works in the same hospital. The nurses in general consider him the greatest catch of the doctors, that is if he had any interest in a social life, as he spends all his time and money dedicated to his work. Katie's temper makes an inopportune appearance in the operating room when she is asked to work late after an already long shift to assist in the non-medical emergency surgery of Tony Brown, who got shot accidentally in the derrière while on a hunting trip. The emergency part of the surgery is that wealthy Tony is the major benefactor to the hospital to the tune of $100,000 per year, he who demanded immediate and quick attention to his injury. Katie's behavior in the operating room costs her her job on Tony's behest, and costs the hospital Tony's annual $100,000 ...

A View to an End....

This impressively silly film starts off with a bang with playboy Peter Lawford having a hunting accident which results in his getting buckshot in his tail. Bickering doctor Gig Young and nurse Jane Greer when not verbally sparring spend most of their screen time examining Lawford's derriere. Although this viewer is willing to concede that the aforementioned part of Lawford's anatomy may very well comprise that actor's greatest charm, the charm is not so great as to serve for the main focal point of an entire film especially when it is never even glimpsed by the audience. That notably absent and undoubtedly welcome sight alone could begin to atone for enduring nearly 80 minutes of Lawford's usual obnoxious urbanity and the total waste of both Young and Greer who are brought together by the end....Lawford's end, that is.

Double Your Pleasure, Double Your Fun

If you liked "The Princess Bride," you'll probably enjoy this movie.

This is a must see for Richard Greene (Robin Hood) fans. He gets to play twin brothers Mario and Carlos. He is fine and dashing in both roles. Mario is his standard square jawed hero, but Carlos is a more flawed and complex character. He even gets to disguise himself as he often did in his Robin Hood television series, and play a third role as a gypsy fortune teller.

The story reminds one more of Zorro than Robin Hood in style. The settings and combination of swords and pistols for fighting also gives it that Zorro feel.

Raymond Burr is delightful as the villainous Baron. He is given nice support by Lee Van Cleef as his henchman. It is nice to see them both this youthful before they became stars in the 1960's.

Paula Raymond and Dona Drake are the beautiful female companions of Richard Greene's brothers. This was the beginning of Paula Raymond's career before she became a staple of dozens of 1950's and 1960's adventure television shows. It is towards the end of songstress Dona Drake's movie career. Both are fine in rather small supporting roles.

The movie moves quickly with lots of action scenes. It is just very well done and professional, albeit standard Hollywood entertainment in the 1950's.

In a film incorrectly reported as Bill Elliott's last starring western, "Bitter Creek" (released in March of 1954 carrying 16843 as the PCA number) falls a tab bit short of that as it was followed by "The Forty-Niners", (released two months later on May 9, 1954 with 16874 as the PCA number), but the correctly-reported absence of production values is duly noted. As Clay Tindall (Bill Elliott as Wild Bill Elliott), comes to a town in a search for the killer of his brother and quickly becomes unpopular with the townspeople who are unwillingly but submissive subjects to the whims of local cattleman Quentin Allen (Carleton Young) and his motley gang of hired hands and henchies. At the end, Elliott is given a typical line from his Columbia and Republic days that indicates that killing for revenge isn't admirable or the right thing to do, although he has just finished a rather thorough job of doing just that.

Wild Bill Elliott's last screen appearance in a western

This was to be Elliott's last western picture. Gone are the slick production values Elliott enjoyed while at Republic, and this entry from Allied Artists is an obvious low budget formula western. Elliott plays the part of the revenge seeking gunslinger to the hilt, but is hampered by pedestrian direction, a soft script, and cheap sets. But somehow the presence of Elliott, as the tight-lipped non-compromising anti-hero shines through, and we are left with a very watchable picture.

Because of its high productivity and "almost" 100 per cent employment, the town of Hayhoe, England is expecting a visit from the Prime Minister. The "almost" is because of Dan Dance (Eddie Byrne), an old rogue who would rather drink and philosophize than work. The Village Council are determined to have a perfect record so they connive to have the old man put into the alms-house which has been unoccupied for many years, where he must abide by rules laid down 400 years ago. A new Vicar arrives and discovers that, because of the circumstances created by the Council, Dan Dance is entitled to 6,000 pounds a year at the expense of the village.

Review :

A nearly forgotten masterpiece of British 1950s charm and comedy

"Time Gentleman Please!" is honestly as good as Titfield Thunderbolt, Genevieve, or School For Scoundrels, even Whisky Galore. Rarely seen due to copyright and distribution disputes it has finally been released!

The film opens at the Ministry for Productivity and Industry (With Ian Carmichael - who else?), where we discover that Hayhoe, a little village in rural Essex, has 99.9% employment, and will be visited by noneless than the Prime Minister himself.

But this is not the main theme of the piece. We move quickly to the charmingly rural village of Hayhoe itself where the snooty council are discussing what to do about Dan Dance - the local colorful character and vagabond - played by Eddie Bryne in only his fourth film in terms of the upcoming visit. (Bryne went on to have a very long and prolific career and is probably most recognized as General Willard from all three early Star Wars movies.)

To tidy the place up Dan is placed as the sole proprietor of the local alms houses and then discovers.... well, you have to watch as see. the film is about Dan and his wonderful ways.

Fantastic charm to this, not unlike Jacques Tati's "Fête du Jour", the village and villagers, the ones who weren't professional actors, give this a wonderful timeless quality of stepping into a forgotten world. Above all though, it's genuinely funny, and I mean laugh out loud funny

  • great performances, excellent timing throughout, and unbelievably

charming; and one of the best plots in any British comedy: the twists and turns are great; without resorting to mania.

With Sid James, Dora Bryan, and Hermione Baddeley to name just a few you know you're in for a treat - and what a treat - this honestly is one of the best of its genre: a lovely, charming, funny British 1950s comedy, and not a mean word or bone in it a real "U" rated film of the sort that you will just wish they could make today... but how? And you'll wish you could be in the Swan at Hayhoe for a pint.

I've already added it to one of my favourite films of all time - and one of the top five British comedies - in a word: wonderful.

Good luck finding it - it's a travesty that it isn't seen more regularly - but if you're lucky enough to see it - do!

Review :

Hi, I'm Will Rogers

Will Rogers, Jr. stars as his own father Will Rogers in what many critics say is one of the best of movie biographies ever. Will, Jr. even asked that nothing be added to over-dramatize or embellish the storyline of the movie. He wanted his father to speak for himself. That's what they said on TCM. If you love film biographies, or like Jane Wyman, or if you have never heard of Will Rogers and want to know more about him, then you're in for a treat. Costarring James Gleason, Slim Pickens, Mary Wickes and Eddie Cantor as himself, this film has more heart and respect for its subject matter in one minute, than a lot of other movie biographies have in the whole film, especially musical biographies. This film shows how one man made a difference in the lives of others by being himself and that he is still being loved and remembered today.
