routine action filler with all usual stereotypes

I watched this film for Van Heflin and Eric Portman; both usually excellent when given some half decent material. Here they floundered, unable to make something of the dreary dialogue and predictable plot. There was jerky editing of the film, with obvious back projection and use of actors' doubles on location, as well as location shooting cut in from another (bigger) budget film (maybe Portman's and Thorold Dickinson's earlier 'Men of Tomorrow') mixed up with studio close ups. The mix is very uneven and after a while it becomes part of the entertainment to spot whether it's a) studio b) location c) doubles etc Van Heflin does his best, trying to instill some oomph into his supposedly devil may care risk taker entrepreneur character. Trouble is Heflin looks as though he checks the risk percentage on ev ery step he takes. Portman has to watch endless tribal singing and dancing, probably taken from that other African film cut into this one. Wanda Hendrix has so little to do she could have phoned her performance in. However it passed away an hour or so on a wet winter's evening.

Review :

Spencer Tracy seems miscast as a dour and cynical sea captain...

An already aged-looking SPENCER TRACY is Captain Jones of the Mayflower in this MGM visualization of what the crossing to the New World may have been like on an overcrowded ship full of hopeful, determined passengers and crew. But neither he nor GENE TIERNEY (as Mrs. Bradford) seem at home in roles that are never really fleshed out by the script. Nevertheless, Tierney gets plenty of wistful close-ups as she gazes toward the horizon (or Tracy), but little of substance to do.

Neither does VAN JOHNSON get more than a brief supporting role as John Alden. LEO GENN gets more material as Tierney's stuffed shirt husband but little can be said of the other passengers except for LLOYD BRIDGES who struts around as a bronzed, blue-eyed pirate with taking ways. He at least livens up the scene whenever he's around.

The main trouble is the lack of strong drama in the script. Most of the passengers are a dull lot. Added to that, the lack of real chemistry between Tracy and Tierney makes it difficult to believe their love could be deep enough for her to care about this rude and cynical man completely lacking any sort of refinement in his nature.

The big storm scene is well realized and staged for maximum effect, but only serves to remind us how dull the other sections of the film are.

Summing up: A very uneven drama about an historical event that celebrated the birth of the New World. Should have been so much better.

Thumbs up for the 'Thunderbolt'

For my money this is the best and funniest of all the 'Ealing Comedies', it is so quintessentially post war British that it could not have been made by any other than Ealing Studios. The plot is simple - British Railways decide to close a local branch line and a group of villagers led by the local squire and vicar battle government red tape and the local bus company to run their own railway, eventually using an ancient locomotive (Thunderbolt) from the museum to pull their train. The character acting is superb as is the beautifully photographed scenery, but what makes this film stand by itself is that it does not rely on sex and violence (well only hammed up - such as the unforgettable joust between a railway locomotive and Sid James's steam roller)and no bad language. It is a reminder of a long departed much simpler and more idealistic age where its message of right would eventually overcome wrong, was almost believable. It is a very gentle film, an innocent film, and despite its age still manages to deliver a feel good factor of 10/10.

Luigi (Cesar Romero)is the owner of a pin-table saloon frequented by questionable characters and kept under constant police surveillance. He meets Barbara Gale (Kay Kendall), neglected wife of heavy gambler Gerald Gale (John Penrose) and after a brief romance, Barbara agrees to go away with Luigi. But Angelo Abbe (Liam Gaffney) is found stabbed to death in Luigi's apartment. Luigi asks his friend Limpy (Victor Maddern) to hep him hide the body but they are picked up by the police. Luigi escapes and sets out to prove his innocence while running from the law.

Review :

It's all VERY familiar

This film is included on a DVD that also has another "forgotten" Film Noir picture--SHOOT TO KILL. However, the film is called by its alternate title SHADOW MAN instead of STREET OF SHADOWS and stars Cesar Romero.

Romero stars as a man who owns a "pin-table lounge"--a place to drink, gamble and play various electronic games (such as pinball)--almost like a poor man's nightclub. He's generally a nice guy, but also a rather tough character. Oddly, for once, Romero uses a strong Spanish accent--something you usually heard less of in his American films.

When a woman is killed, Romero is caught trying to hide the body. Though he didn't do it, it sure looks bad for him. So, Romero escapes and spends the film trying to establish his innocence--a rather clichéd premise, to say the least. It's been done 1001 times before, so unfortunately, while it is well made, it's also incredibly familiar. Decent acting, decent direction and a second-rate plot--oh, and by the way, the soundtrack was really bad (it was mostly harmonica)!

FYI--Kay Kendall stars in this film. She later married Rex Harrison, though died of cancer just two years later in 1959. Also, the other film on the DVD (SHOOT TO KILL) is a more enjoyable film despite having a cast of no-name actors.

How Can We Possibly Be More Cruel ?

I often read that this movie was among the worst movies of all-time but I do not agree.

Sure, this movie isn't among the greatest movies and the actors aren't too good sometimes but when we consider the story and the movies that were done in Quebec at that time, we realize that isn't as bad as everybody says.

This movie still changed history.

Lucie Mitchell, Paul Desmarteaux and Yvonne Laflamme are excellent.

Desmarteaux had been one of the straight men on stage of Oliver Guimond Sr.

This movie is one of the first, if not the very first, movie he did.

The career of Lucie Mitchell took a blow.

No, not because the public didn't like the movie, on the contrary, but because she was despised by everybody because of that role that people took too seriously.

For Yvonne Laflamme, this role was the greatest of her short career.

For this movie, the sound is very poor.

The quality of the image, much like "Séraphin" (1950), isn't really clean.

But this movie will forever be remembered in the people's mind as one of the greatest movies of that time because it tells a true story. A true story that haunted the Quebec in a way.

This movie wasn't terrible, but the true story behind it was.

She hit her with sticks, made her drink washing water, made her eat soap, burned her hair, head and hands, pushed her down a stairway and the list goes on ! If you are not sensible to that true story, then you got a heart of stone.
